Seriously? What is it? Thats exactly what I thought when I first heard this word!
Adularescence is the optical phenomenon that is produced in moonstones. In simpler terms, Adularescence is that flash of color that will appear when light hits moonstone at a certain angle.
This magical phenomenon comes from below the surface of a moonstone and only will occur when light is reflected between layers of minerals. Adularescence is often also referred to as schiller or shiller, which can be described as a sort of milky blue lustrous glow, at times adularescence can also feature a full spectrum of color from beautiful pinks to orange and yellow!
The adularescence will seem to move as the stone is turned or a light source is moved, this gives the impression of a lunar light glowing from within in the stone. This is where the name moonstone came from!
This spellbinding effect is most usually produced by adularia, which is where the name Adularescence stems from. Adularescence can also appear in a variety of other gemstones like Rose Quartz, Opals and Agates! But due to the difference mineral compositions in these stones, the visual effect presents differently.
